Sucks wide but it's not going to break you becausethat's where your emergency fund comes into play. Cash reserves make unexpected wallet-breaking expenses manageable. It's still going to hurt to shell out for a repair but at least you won't have to skip a bill or use credit to pay for it. Or worse, not be able to get that car fixed. Cash budgeting helps with all that. It won't be easy or fast, it may not be pretty, but it can be done and in less than a year you can have a sizable emergency fund with real dedication and discipline. That means skip UberEats and cook your own meals. :) The 100 Envelope 5,500.00 Challenge is perfect! We subscribe to the theory that you assess the amount, find the sticker that matches the amount you have for your fund and place it in an envelope. When you run out of stickers and assuming you've not grabbed a bit of the ready here and there, you'll have 5,500.00! FIVE THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS! Say it again. Keep saying it. Know why you are shedding blood, sweat and tears. FIVE THOUSAND, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS Cool huh? The other way, which we aren't fond of because everyone needs a bit of wiggle room, is to label all envelopes, pick one at random and stuff it. Sounds simple. It's not that easy. It's payday. You've divided up your cash where it's supposed to go for your expenses and you grab a random envelope and it's the 98.00 envelope. Crap. You don't have 98.00. Unless you are incredibly disciplined, which means you probably aren't the Free Spirit, then you are going to quietly slip that 98.00 envelope back in the stack. If you're the Nerd, you'll paw through until you find one that matches the amount you have. If you are the Free Spirit (that would be Maria!) then it's likely you'll take that cash and find something to buy :) While both methods have their pros and cons, how they end up is the same. With $5,500.00 in cold hard CASH. You can do it as many times as you'd like, in the amount of time you'd like. It's best to have some discipline and be steady. Got 10.00 bucks? Skip the 5bucks coffee and get it at home. Not the same naturally but you don't want to be the same as everyone else. There is always time to get that fancy coffee after you've met your goals.
