U.S.%20%23%204999%0A2015%2071%26cent%3B%20Eastern%20Tiger%20Swallowtail%0AButterfly%20Series%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%201587%2C%20colonist%20and%20artist%20John%20White%20depicted%20the%20Eastern%20tiger%20swallowtail%20while%20accompanying%20Sir%20Walter%20Raleigh%26rsquo%3Bs%20third%20expedition%20to%20the%20New%20World.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20was%20the%20first%20butterfly%20known%20to%20have%20been%20documented%20in%20the%20United%20States.%26nbsp%3B%20%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AOne%20of%20the%20most%20common%20butterflies%20in%20North%20America%2C%20the%20Eastern%20tiger%20swallowtail%20is%20also%20one%20of%20the%20largest.%26nbsp%3B%20Its%20wingspan%20can%20measure%20up%20to%20five%20and%20a%20half%20inches%20across.%26nbsp%3B%20From%20spring%20until%20fall%2C%20gardens%2C%20forests%20and%20meadows%20across%20the%20Eastern%20United%20States%20are%20dappled%20with%20these%20light%20yellow%20tiger-striped%20butterflies.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0ANot%20all%20Eastern%20tiger%20swallowtails%20are%20yellow%20with%20black%20stripes.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20minority%20of%20females%20take%20on%20a%20dark%20gray%20coloring%2C%20with%20their%20tiger%20stripes%20barely%20visible.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20darker%20coloring%20protects%20the%20butterfly%20from%20potential%20predators%20by%20mimicking%20the%20poisonous%20pipevine%20swallowtail.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20trait%20is%20more%20prevalent%20in%20tiger%20swallowtails%20in%20the%20southeast%2C%20where%20the%20pipevine%20swallowtail%20is%20common.%26nbsp%3B%20%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThough%20it%20flies%20relatively%20fast%2C%20the%20Eastern%20tiger%20swallowtail%20beats%20its%20wings%20rather%20slowly%2C%20allowing%20watchers%20to%20better%20appreciate%20its%20beauty.%26nbsp%3B%20Named%20state%20butterfly%20of%20five%20states%20and%20state%20insect%20in%20another%2C%20the%20large%20but%20delicate%20Eastern%20tiger%20swallowtail%20is%20a%20favorite%20in%20the%20Eastern%20United%20States.%0A%0AButterfly%20Series%0A%0AOn%20May%2017%2C%202010%2C%20the%20USPS%20issued%20the%20first%20stamp%20in%20the%20Butterfly%20Series.%0A%0AIn%20late%202009%2C%20the%20USPS%20unveiled%20the%20first%20butterfly%20stamp%20for%20greeting%20card%20envelopes%20that%20required%20additional%20postage%20(an%20extra%2020%26cent%3B)%20than%20the%20standard%20one-ounce%20rate%20covered.%26nbsp%3B%20This%20would%20apply%20to%20envelopes%20that%20couldn%26rsquo%3Bt%20be%20sorted%20on%20the%20USPS%26rsquo%3Bs%20automated%20equipment%2C%20otherwise%20known%20as%20%26ldquo%3Bnonmachinable.%26rdquo%3B%0A%0ASome%20of%20these%20nonmachinable%20envelopes%20include%20those%20that%20are%20oddly-shaped%20or%20vertical%2C%20lumpy%2C%20rigid%2C%20or%20with%20clasps%2C%20ribbons%2C%20or%20buttons%20on%20them.%26nbsp%3B%20Even%20if%20an%20envelope%20weighed%20less%20than%20one%20ounce%2C%20but%20was%20unmachinable%2C%20it%20would%20need%20this%20stamp.%26nbsp%3B%20However%2C%20letters%20that%20were%20simply%20heavy%20didn%26rsquo%3Bt%20necessarily%20need%20it.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20two-ounce%20rate%20at%20the%20time%20was%2061%26cent%3B%2C%20and%20this%20stamp%20was%2064%26cent%3B%2C%20so%20they%20would%20be%20overpaying%20by%203%26cent%3B%20if%20they%20used%20it.%0A%0A%0AThe%20USPS%20worked%20closely%20with%20the%20greeting%20card%20industry%20on%20this%20new%20stamp.%26nbsp%3B%20Prior%20to%20this%20issue%2C%20some%20greeting%20card%20envelopes%20would%20be%20imprinted%20with%20%26ldquo%3Bextra%20postage%20required.%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20With%20the%20creation%20of%20this%20new%20stamp%2C%20the%20Greeting%20Card%20Association%20encouraged%20its%20members%20to%20print%20a%20butterfly%20silhouette%20on%20the%20envelopes%20of%20cards%20that%20would%20require%20this%20additional%20postage.%26nbsp%3B%20Reflecting%20this%20close%20working%20relationship%2C%20the%2064%26cent%3B%20monarch%20butterfly%20stamp%20was%20issued%20on%20May%2017%2C%202010%2C%20at%20the%20National%20Stationery%20Show%20held%20at%20the%20Jacob%20Javits%20Center%20in%20New%20York.%0A%0A%0AThe%20monarch%20stamp%20remained%20in%20use%20for%20two%20years%2C%20being%20replaced%20by%20the%20Baltimore%20checkerspot%20butterfly%20stamp%20in%202012%20when%20the%20nonmachinable%20rate%20increased%20to%2065%26cent%3B.%26nbsp%3B%20New%20stamps%20were%20issued%20each%20year%20through%202016.%26nbsp%3B%20The%202015%20and%202016%20followed%20the%20Forever%20format%2C%20in%20printing%20%26ldquo%3Bnon-machinable%20surcharge%26rdquo%3B%20on%20the%20stamp%2C%20rather%20than%20the%20actual%20denomination.%0A%0AThe%20California%20dogface%20butterfly%20stamp%20was%20initially%20announced%20in%202016%20and%20expected%20for%20a%202017%20release.%26nbsp%3B%20However%2C%20the%20USPS%20said%20that%20they%20had%20designed%20the%20stamp%2C%20but%20wouldn%26rsquo%3Bt%20produce%20it%20until%20supplies%20of%20existing%20butterfly%20stamps%20were%20nearly%20depleted.%26nbsp%3B%20So%20that%20stamp%20wasn%26rsquo%3Bt%20issued%20until%202019.%0A%0A%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20
