These specially prepared acrylic primers provide an absorbent surface for watercolor—on almost any substrate you can imagine! Especially useful on classic painting surfaces like canvas, wood panels, and paper, Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground is easy to apply and creates a familiar, subtly toothy surface for watercolorists.

On non-porous surfaces like metal and glass, you can still use this versatile ground, but Daniel Smith recommends that you abrade the surface before application to allow the primer to adhere better. (You can do this with sandpaper or abrasive paste, available at hardware stores.)

Apply in three thin coats, in alternating directions, just like you would with any other primer. The texture is very smooth and each ground covers beautifully, with a high pigment load that is unusual in primers. (Except, of course, for the transparent version!)

Available in 4 oz and 16 oz jars, with five different color options for a wide range of styles and subjects. The large 16 oz size is available only in Titanium White, Mars Black, and Buff Titanium. Iridescent Gold, Transparent, and Pearlescent White are available only in 4 oz jars. Pigment information is included in the drop-down menu next to each color option.

Made in the United States.

This Daniel Smith 16 oz Titanium White Watercolor Ground allows you to paint with watercolors on stretched canvas, fabrics, wood, plaster, metal, plastic, or glass. Apply and let it dry to create an absorbent ground layer on almost any surface. This ground is pigmented with Titanium White pigment.
