CULTURE
Soil temperature: 60 degrees fahrenheit
Germination lighting: Dark
Germination days: 20 days
Seed Depth: 1/2
Seed Spacing: 24
Plant height: 40
Plant type: Perennial
Maturation days: 365 days
When sowing in fall direct sow after your first frost by planting your seeds 1/2 deep as they need darkness to germinate. If in a very mild climate where it does not ever freeze in the winter you will need to cold treat these before sowing (see below).
If sowing in spring, or starting indoors in pots, you will need to cold treat these for 2 weeks prior to sowing. Mix your seeds with 1/2 cup of potting soil or peat in a baggie and add two tablespoons of water. Place the baggie in your fridge (not your freezer) for two weeks and then sow 1/2 deep.
Wild Blue Indigo is a very slow growing perennial and can take up to one year before it flowers. At the end of your growing season, and after your first frost in fall, it will naturally turn black where you can cut it to the ground where it will re-grow the following spring.

Though slow to establish, these brilliant blue and purple blossoms are worth the wait. The bushy perennial can persist for decades and is a source for indigo dye. Blue Wild Indigo grows in sandy, dry areas or open woods; its deep tap root gives it protection from the drought and prairie fires of its native ground. Native Americans and early settlers once used various species of this plant family to make a blue dye, since the superior true indigo dye was expensive and not easily obtained.
