Shot Glass
Material: ceramic
There are a few important things to know about the shot glasses before you
sublimate:
- The shot glasses are similar to all other sublimated products in that the
transfer and shot glass surface need to make direct contact and reach about
400 degrees before sublimation will occur and glass takes longer to heat than
most products.
- The shot glass has a poly-coating in order to accept the sublimation ink. Optimal image quality will be achieved using shot glasses
specifically designed for sublimation.
- Because not all ovens are created equally the dwell time can range from 6
to 14 minutes in an oven depending on which type of wrap you use and how well
your particular oven performs. Some experimenting with dwell time may be
necessary for best results. Directions for using a wrap in an oven are listed
below.
There are 2 methods of sublimating this product - in a convection oven using
shrink wrap or a silicone wrap. Scroll for all methods.
METHOD 1 - IN A CONVECTION OVEN (using shrink wrap)
Supplies needed:
- sublimatable substrate (Shot Glass)
- sublimation transfer
- shrink wrap
- heat gun (to pre-shrink the shrink wrap onto the Shot Glass)
- Fan for cooling (DO NOT PUT IN WATER THE GLASS WILL CRACK)
Oven settings:
- temperature - 400 degrees F if using a convection oven (recommended).
- dwell time - 6:00 - 8:00 minutes (depending on the oven type)
- The recommended settings above may need adjustments for best results.
Settings will vary depending on the oven brand and model ink and paper and
atmospheric conditions.
- Convection ovens are recommended over traditional ovens for even
distribution of heat.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F before placing the shot glass into the
oven
Steps:
1. Position the substrate onto the transfer.
2. Tape two ends of the transfer. Make sure to start and end the transfer in
between where the white area starts and ends.
3. Place the substrate and transfer into the shrink wrap sleeve
4. Using the heat gun carefully direct hot air onto the shrink wrap evenly
until the shrink wrap has conformed all around the shot glass
5. Using the oven settings above place the glass in the oven upside down. If
placing multiple shot glasses leave space between each to allow for proper
heat & air circulation.
6. Remove items from the oven after the appropriate dwell time using heat
resistant gloves if necessary - the items will be very hot.
7. Remove the shrink wrap and the transfer and put in front of a fan to cool.
Tips:
- Do not place glass into water after sublimation - cracking will occur. Use
a
fan instead.
- If the image of the final product appears light increase the pressure or
the dwell time (1-3 minutes).
- If the image on the final product appears blurred or substrate appears
yellowed or has brown spots on the rim of the top or bottom of the mug reduce
the dwell time slightly (15-30 seconds).
METHOD 2 - IN A CONVECTION OVEN
Supplies needed:
- silicone mug wrap
- sublimatable substrate (Shot Glass)
- sublimation transfer
- scratch paper
- Fan for cooling (DO NOT PUT IN WATER THE GLASS WILL CRACK)
Oven settings:
- temperature - 400 degrees F.
- dwell time - 7:00 - 9:00 minutes (depending on the wrap and oven type)
- Silicone wrap pressure -medium
- The recommended settings above may need adjustments for best results.
Settings will vary depending on the oven brand and model ink and paper and
atmospheric conditions.
- Be sure that the artwork does not go beyond the size/dimension limits of
the
Silicone wrap.
- Convection ovens are recommended over traditional ovens for even
distribution of heat.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F before placing the shot glass into the
oven.
Steps:
1. Position the substrate onto the transfer.
2. Tape two ends of the transfer. Make sure to start and end the transfer in
between where the white area starts and ends.
3. Wrap another piece of scratch paper around the shot glass and tape the
ends. This prevents ink from transferring onto the wrap.
4. Wrap the silicone wrap around the shot glass also starting in between
white area of shot glass and stretch and roll the silicone wrap around
itself.
5. Put a strip of tape around silicone wrap to prevent it from unwrapping.
6. Using the oven settings above stand the shot glass up in the oven. If
placing multiple shot glasses leave space between each to allow for proper
heat & air circulation.
7. Remove items from the oven after the appropriate dwell time using heat
resistant gloves if necessary - the items will be very hot.
8. Remove the silicone wrap tear off the scratch paper and the transfer and
put in front of a fan to cool.
