%26nbsp%3B%0AGet%20the%20Complete%201932%20%0AWashington%20Bicentennials%0A%0AOwn%20the%20entire%20set%20of%20twelve%201932%20Washington%20Bicentennial%20%20Commemoratives.%26nbsp%3B%20Each%20classically%20engraved%20stamp%20is%20based%20on%20a%20different%20%20historic%20portrait%20of%20George%20Washington%20by%20renowned%20artists.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20set%20%20chronicles%20Washington's%20life%20and%20accomplishments.%26nbsp%3B%20Now%20over%2075%20years%20%20old%2C%20this%2012-stamp%20set%20is%20a%20meaningful%20tribute%20to%20our%20nation's%20first%20%20President.%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0A%0AWashington%20Bicentennial%26nbsp%3B%0AOn%20January%201%2C%201932%2C%20the%20US%20Post%20Office%20Department%20issued%20a%20set%20of%2012%20stamps%20honoring%20the%20200th%20anniversary%20of%20George%20Washington%26rsquo%3Bs%20birth.%0AThe%20Post%20Office%20officially%20announced%20their%20plans%20for%20the%20set%20of%20stamps%20in%20November%201930.%26nbsp%3B%20Early%20on%2C%20they%20had%20grand%20ideas%20for%20the%20set.%0A%0AAt%20one%20point%2C%20the%20set%20was%20to%20consist%20of%20at%20least%2018%20stamps%20with%20all%20values%20between%20%26frac12%3B%26cent%3B%20and%20%245.%26nbsp%3B%20Prior%20to%20that%2C%20the%20largest%20set%20issued%20was%20the%20Columbians%2C%20which%20had%20comprised%2016%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20Post%20Office%20also%20considered%20using%20the%20same%20wide%20format%20of%20the%20Columbians%20for%20the%20Washington%20Bicentennials.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0AThe%20plan%20was%20to%20create%20two-color%20stamps%20with%20grand%20scenes%20retelling%20Washington%26rsquo%3Bs%20life%20%26ndash%3B%20crossing%20the%20Delaware%2C%20his%201793%20inauguration%2C%20his%20home%20life%2C%20his%20birthplace%2C%20resigning%20his%20commission%2C%20a%20double%20portrait%20with%20his%20wife%20Martha%2C%20his%20tomb%20at%20Mount%20Vernon%2C%20and%20the%20Washington%20Monument.%26nbsp%3BHowever%2C%20the%20Post%20Office%20eventually%20decided%20against%20the%20plan%20because%20they%20would%20have%20to%20use%20famous%20paintings%20that%20were%20known%20to%20be%20filled%20with%20inaccuracies.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0AAt%20one%20point%2C%20Congress%20considered%20a%20bill%20that%20proposed%20that%20all%20the%20stamps%20issued%20in%201932%20bear%20Washington%26rsquo%3Bs%20portrait%2C%20but%20that%20bill%20was%20never%20passed.%26nbsp%3B%20In%20the%20end%2C%20the%20Post%20Office%20decided%20to%20produce%20a%20set%20of%2012%20single%20color%20stamps%20picturing%20portraits%20by%20famous%20artists%20that%20showed%20Washington%20at%20different%20times%20in%20his%20life.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%0AAs%20a%20result%2C%20several%20of%20the%20stamps%20pictured%20unfamiliar%20images%20of%20Washington.%26nbsp%3B%20But%20the%20Post%20Office%20specifically%20selected%20the%20famed%20and%20beloved%20Gilbert%20Stuart%26nbsp%3BAthenaeum%26nbsp%3Bportrait%20for%20the%202%26cent%3B%20stamp.%26nbsp%3B%20At%20the%20time%2C%202%26cent%3B%20was%20the%20normal%20first-class%20letter%20rate%2C%20so%20that%20would%20have%20been%20the%20most%20used%20stamp%20at%20the%20time.%26nbsp%3B%20However%2C%20a%20few%20months%20after%20the%20series%20was%20issued%2C%20the%20first-class%20letter%20rate%20was%20raised%20to%203%26cent%3B.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0AThe%20Post%20Office%20conducted%20an%20emergency%20reprinting%20of%20the%203%26cent%3B%20Washington%20Bicentennial%20stamp%20as%20well%20as%20the%20current%203%26cent%3B%20Lincoln%20regular%20issue.%26nbsp%3B%20But%20there%20still%20weren%26rsquo%3Bt%20enough%20of%20the%20stamps%20to%20satisfy%20demand.%26nbsp%3B%20And%20the%20Post%20Office%20knew%20that%20the%20portrait%20on%20the%203%26cent%3B%20stamp%20was%20little%20known%20to%20most%20people.%26nbsp%3B%20So%20they%20decided%20to%20rework%20the%202%26cent%3B%26nbsp%3BAthenaeum%26nbsp%3Bdesign.%26nbsp%3B%20They%20made%20it%20a%203%26cent%3B%20stamp%20and%20removed%20the%20date%20ribbons%20next%20to%20the%20portrait%2C%20so%20it%20would%20essentially%20be%20a%20regular%20issue.%26nbsp%3B%0A%0A%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%0A%20%20%20%
